When the first-generation Nissan Pathfinder debuted in 1986 for the 1987 model year, Top Gun dominated the box office, the Chicago Bears won their only Super Bowl and the modern family SUV was just taking shape.

With its introduction, Pathfinder helped bridge the gap between rugged trucks and family vehicles. It combined true off-road capability with greater comfort and usability than many traditional 4x4s of the era. This formula became the blueprint for today's hugely popular midsize SUV segment. Over four decades, Pathfinder has evolved to continue meeting the needs of adventurous families with room for up to eight passengers and V6 power.

For the 2027 model year (expected availability November 2026), Pathfinder arrives with a Special Edition, complete with a unique color scheme honoring the original.

Five generations of V6 capability

In the mid-1980s, Nissan designers began studying a way to bring the popular Patrol SUV to the North American market. As plans and platforms shifted, the Pathfinder was born, based on the Nissan Hardbody pickup.

The first Pathfinder (1987-1995) met a burgeoning SUV market with iconic Hardbody design elements, including its three horizontal slots atop the grille. Originally available only as a two-door, it offered a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 140 horsepower. Since the start, Nissan has always offered a V6 on Pathfinder.

The success of the first Pathfinder demanded an even more capable second generation (1996-2004). Nissan met the challenge with a larger V6 and more refined handling. For 2001, Nissan upgraded the power unit to a 3.5-liter V6 from the multi-award-winning VQ engine family, producing 250 horsepower – a figure some V8s didn't achieve at the time. Inside, Nissan continued to innovate with features like Pathfinder's first navigation system, which featured a unique Birdview™ 3D map display. This was a highly advanced feature for its time and a precursor to today's sophisticated vehicle mapping systems.

The third-generation Pathfinder (2004-2012) expanded capability inside and out. A split fold-down third-row seat gave it seven-passenger capability for the first time, and a V8 producing 310 horsepower and 388 lb-ft of torque was available in the lineup.

Fourth-generation Pathfinder models (2012-2020) maintained V6 capability while evolving design language into the 2010s. Several new family-focused innovations were introduced, including LATCH AND GLIDE™® technology that allowed forward movement and access to the third row with a child safety seat remaining securely in place in the second row. It also introduced the rugged Rock Creek grade, paying homage to Pathfinder’s off-road roots.

The fifth and current generation debuted for the 2022 model year with a completely new look inside and out. The 3.5-liter V6, which powers the full lineup today, is linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to a class-leading 6,000 lbs. (when properly equipped). Pathfinder received substantial updates for 2026, including revised front and rear fascias as well as a 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ standard across all trims.

Assembled by and for American families

Originally produced in Japan, Pathfinder assembly moved to Nissan's Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee in 2004, with engines being assembled at the Decherd Powertrain Assembly Plant about 60 miles southeast.

"When the first Pathfinder vehicle began production here, it started a new era," said Larry Mullins, a manager of Material Handling who has worked at the Smyrna plant for 34 years. "It was tremendously exciting."

Pathfinder is designed to make adventures easy for families, and that goal isn't lost on Mullins – eight of his family members also work at the Smyrna Plant, including his daughter, Nicki Saputo, a quality manager who oversees structural compliance at the facility.

"Our entire family has had a piece of the Pathfinder pie," said Saputo, who has worked on Pathfinder since 2016. "We take a lot of pride in seeing those vehicles on the road or hitting the trails."

Mullins, Saputo and 5,700 other Nissan employees in Smyrna have helped Nissan keep up with growing demand for Pathfinder, which achieved its best sales quarter ever in Q2 2026 and its second-best third-quarter retails sales ever in Q3.
