The 2027 Nissan Z1 (expected availability summer 2026) arrives with several changes aimed to elevate its performance, from larger-diameter shock absorbers on Performance models to a new manual transmission option for Z NISMO.

Nissan also made careful adjustments to Z's design that respect its roots while continuing to move the Z story forward. While the current-generation Z already includes several references to previous generations – such as 300ZX-inspired taillights and "Since 1969" etched in the rear glass – those with a keen eye will find five new nods to Z's iconic lineage:

1) A revised grille inspired by the S30

Perhaps the most noticeable difference is Z's new face, which has been redesigned to include a split grille. The look is a reference to the original 240Z, also known as the S30.

"When we launched this generation, there was a lot of discussion around the front face and the big grille for cooling," said Paul Hawson, director of Advanced Product Planning & Strategy at Nissan North America. "We've been able to maintain that cooling but have leaned further into the nostalgia by adding a horizontal bar through the mouth so it looks more like the S30 generation."

To accomplish this, designers worked on the shape of grille, while engineers carefully adjusted the front parking sensor packaging.

Additionally, a Z emblem replaces a Nissan emblem, which also aligns its design to the S30, S130, Z31 and Z32 generations.

2) New 19-inch wheels inspired by the 300ZX

Z Performance drivers will be treated to new 19-inch RAYS® alloy wheels inspired by the 300ZX (also known as Z31).

The ten-spoke design is arranged in a star-like layout, evoking the rim design of the Z31's machined wheels available in the mid-1980s.

"The new wheel design carefully balances a modern look while paying homage to the beloved Z31," said Shinichiro Irie, program design director at Nissan who led the design of the current-generation Z. "Plus, the thin spokes show off the Z Performance's large brake rotors and red calipers."

Z Performance's wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza® S007 high-performance tires. For enhanced grip, the rear wheels are 0.5 inches wider than the front's.

3) A new green paint color referencing the first-generation Z

The 2027 Z debuts in stunning Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic2, an all-new color. Shinkai translates to "deep sea" in Japanese, and it features a rich green reminiscent of Grand Prix Green, which was offered on the S30.

Developing the new color was no small feat, as green paints can be prone to fading after prolonged sun exposure. To combat this, Nissan engineers mixed ultra-fine yellow and blue pigments, which appear green but are more resistant to fading. They also added a mild metallic flake to enhance depth and emphasize Z's distinct character lines.

Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic is available on both Sport and Performance grades.

4) Available tan interior

Z Performance grades are available with a tan interior – another reference to the S30 generation, which featured a similar color palette.

When paired with a Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic exterior, the green-and-tan look is a classic sports car combination.

"The tan interior provides a sophisticated impression that contrasts nicely with the black cabin materials on the upper dash and doors," Irie said. "We expect Z enthusiasts to love this new offering."

In addition to Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic, the tan interior can be paired with Black Diamond Pearl, Bayside Blue Quad Coat, Pearl White TriCoat and Solid Red exterior colors.

5) A new startup animation referencing seven generations of Z

The standard fully digital meter display features a new startup animation in Z Sport and Performance grades.

"When you start up the car, you'll notice a new startup sequence. It includes previous Z generations popping out in an animation," Hawson explained. "It's more nostalgia – we're trying to pay our respects to the generations before."

As before, NISMO models feature a unique startup animation.

With the 2027 model, Nissan has thoughtfully evolved the Z to strike the right balance between embracing its heritage while remaining a thoroughly modern sports car.

From its new face to the finishing touches, the 2027 Nissan Z honors every generation – and rewards drivers who know the Z story.
